The Yankees Hit Two Walk Offs to Pick Up a Series Win Against Washington
The New York Yankees faced off against the Washington Nationals. Jameson Taillon got the start in Game 1, and he pitched well. Taillon threw 6.1 innings while allowing three runs. The Yankees got their offense from two home runs over the short porch off the bat of DJ Lemahieu, and a homer from Gary Sanchez. With a tie game in the eighth inning the Yankees bullpen fell apart.
The Yankees bullpen was due for a bad outing, and man did it blow up in their face. Jonathan Loasiga started the eighth, and he gave up four earned runs in 0.1 innings. Luis Cessa came in after Loasiga and allowed two earned runs in 1.2 innings. This outburst in the late innings from the National offense completely shocked the Yankees and their fans. The meltdown from the bullpen caused the Yankees to lose this game 11-4.
Game two saw an epic pitchers duel between Corey Kluber and Max Scherzer. Corey Kluber pitched well as he threw 5.2 innings while allowing two earned runs. His counterpart Max Scherzer was much better. Scherzer went 7.1 innings with fourteen strikeouts while allowing one run on two hits. The only Yankee run came from a Kyle Higashioka home run. This pitchers duel came down to the wire as the Yankees looked to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth. Gleyber Torres came up with runners on the corners. He lined a game tying single off of Brad Hand.
Aroldis Chapman entered for the top of the tenth. The Nats scored a run to take the lead in the tenth. In the bottom of the tenth Mike Ford hit a game tying single. Justin Wilson entered in the eleventh, and he threw a 1-2-3 inning. In the bottom of the eleventh Gleyber Torres came up with the bases loaded. He grounded an RBI infield hit to win the game. This was the Yankees first walk off of the season. The Yankees completely stole a game in which they were dominated by Scherzer. The 4-3 saw the Yanks tie up the series 1-1.
The Yankees looked to secure the series win in game three with Domingo German on the bump. German pitched fantastic. The Yankees picked up a run off of an RBI single from Aaron Hicks. Gleyber Torres also picked up his first home run of the season as he extended the lead to 2-0. In the seventh Domingo German gave up a two run shot to Kyle Schwarber. It was disappointing that German’s fantastic night ended with him giving up a game tying homer, but nonetheless German was great.
Mike King came in after German and he threw 1.1 scoreless innings. Wandy Peralta came in after King, and he got a huge out against Juan Soto. In the top of the ninth Aroldis Chapman threw a shutout inning. In the bottom of the ninth Giancarlo Stanton hit a RBI single to score Tyler Wade, and win the game 3-2. The Yankees ended their homestand with another series win, their second consecutive walk off win, and a 7-2 record for the homestand.
The Yankees are finally starting to be fun again. Their offense is not quite clicking yet, but they are finding ways to win. The Yankees will now head to the Trop for a three game set against the Rays.
