Yankees Kick off Season by Taking 2 Out of Three From Red Sox
The New York Yankees kicked off the 2022 season against the Boston Red Sox with a three game set at Yankee Stadium. Gerrit Cole faced off against Nathan Eovaldi in game one. Cole got off to a brutal start. He walked the leadoff hitter on four pitches, and then he gave up a two run bomb to Rafael Devers. He then gave up an RBI double to JD Martinez. The Yankees dug themselves a 3-0 hole before even recording an out. He escaped that inning without any further damage. The Yankees then struck back in the bottom of the first with a two run bomb off the bat of Anthony Rizzo. That swing by Rizzo ignited the stadium and brought the team back to life. Cole then grinded through the next three innings. He finished his outing after four innings pitched with three earned runs and four strikeouts. Despite not having his best stuff, he gave the Yanks a chance to win the ballgame. The Yankees then tied the game in the bottom of the fourth from a Giancarlo Stanton missile solo shot. Chad Green pitched a shutout fifth inning. Clay Holmes was called on for the sixth inning, and the Red Sox took a 4-3 lead from an Alex Verdugo RBI single. Miguel Castro was called on to get the final out of the sixth, and he got a huge bases loaded strikeout to keep it a one run game.
Jonathan Loaisiga pitched a scoreless seventh, and he got the first out of the eighth. Wandy Peralta finished the eighth. DJ Lemahieu stepped to the plate in the bottom of the eighth down by a run, and he drove the ball to right center over the wall for a game tying home run. Aroldis Chapman came on in the ninth and threw a scoreless inning to keep the game tied. The Yanks were unable to score in the bottom of the ninth, so the game went into extras. Michael King stepped on the mound in the tenth inning. Extra inning games in 2022 will include the runner starting on second, and this hurt the Yankees yet again. Xander Bogaerts blooped a single to take the 5-4 lead in the tenth. The Yankees would then turn a big double play to keep it a one run ball game. The bottom of the tenth inning was not lacking drama. Yankees manager Aaron Boone made the tough decision to sit Gleyber Torres on Opening Day. Now, down by one run with the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth inning, Aaron Boone called on Gleyber Torres to pinch hit for Kyle Higashioka in this high pressure situation. After trailing 0-2 in the at bat, Torres found a way to drive the ball to center field for a huge game tying sac fly. The Yanks could not find a way to walk it off in the tenth, so Mike King went back out for the eleventh. King threw an electric scoreless inning to give the Yankees a chance to bat with the game tied.
Josh Donaldson stepped up to the plate and drove a single through the middle to walk it off. The Yankees 6-5 in an incredible game. Donaldson walked it off in his first ever game as a New York Yankee. The Yankees came back after trailing three different times in this game. They battled back to claw out a 6-5 win on Opening Day. What a way to start the 2022 season!
Luis Severino got the start in game two of this three game set. He was facing off against Nick Pivetta. It was Severino’s first start since 2019. Sevy threw a nice first inning, but he ran into some trouble in the second. After a defensive blunder from Kiner-Falefa, Sevy gave up a two run bomb to Alex Verdugo. Sevy’s night concluded after three strong innings. He looked sharp other than the one mistake to Verdugo on the homer. He threw three innings while allowing five hits and two earned runs, and he collected five strikeouts.
Ron Marinaccio made his major league debut when he came on the pitch the fourth inning for the Yankees. Marinaccio had a solid debut as he threw a scoreless inning with two punchouts. In the bottom of the fourth the fourth the Yankees tied the game from an Anthony Rizzo two run bomb. Rizzo’s bomb strikes life into the Yankee dugout for the second day in a row. Miguel Castro threw a shutout fifth inning for the Yanks. Lucas Luetge made his first appearance of the season when he threw a scoreless sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth Giancarlo Stanton struck yet again when he hit a moon shot to take the lead. Stanton’s two run bomb gave the Yankees a 4-2 lead. Chad Green pitched the seventh inning, Clay Holmes pitched the eighth, and Aroldis Chapman got the save in the ninth. The 4-2 victory against the Red Sox secured the Yankees series win as they start their season off 2-0.
Jordan Montgomery got his first start of the season as the Yankees looked to sweep the Red Sox. In the first inning, the Sox took the lead with an RBI double by J.D Martinez. Later that inning Christian Arroyo hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. The Yankees got on the board with an RBI single from Giancarlo Stanton to make it 2-1. Montgomery went out for the fourth, but was pulled after 3.1 innings. Monty had a solid and gritty outing considering he was drilled with a comebacker in the first inning. Clarke Schmidt came on for the Yanks in his season debut. He allowed a sac fly to Jonathan Arauz which made it 3-1. The Yankees tied it up in the bottom of the fourth with a two run single off the bat of Anthony Rizzo. Clarke Schmidt pitched a scoreless fifth inning, but in the sixth inning he gave up a solo home run to Bobby Dalbec to give the Red Sox a 4-3 lead.
Lucas Luetge pitched a shutout seventh, Wandy pitched a shutout eighth, and Loaisiga threw a scoreless ninth inning. While the bullpen kept it a one run game, the Yankees were unable to push across the tying run as they lost 4-3. In this game the Yanks constantly failed to drive in runners on base, and it proved fatal in this 4-3 loss. While the series ended on a sour note, the Yankees did have an encouraging series to start the season as they grab two out of three from their division rival, the Boston Red Sox.
