Yankees Pick Up an Exhilarating Two Game Sweep Over the Blue Jays

The Yankees faced off against the Toronto Blue Jays in a two game set at Yankee Stadium. Luis Severino got the start in game one. The Blue Jays got off to an early lead from a leadoff home run by George Springer. The Jays added two more runs in the second from a Santiago Espinal double to make it 3-0. After the rough start Sevy settled in. It looked like Sevy would be pulled from this game early, but he bore down and found a way to pitch into the fifth inning. Sevy’s final statline was 4.2 innings pitched with eight strikeouts while allowing three earned runs. Miguel Castro came in and threw 1.1 scoreless innings. The Yankees could not get anything going offensively. They were being no hit by Yusei Kikuchi after five innings. Down 3-0 in the sixth, DJ Lemahieu gave the Yanks their first hit with a double. Later in the sixth, Giancarlo Stanton would step to the plate as the tying runner. Stanton drove the ball to right, and it fell right over the short porch for a game tying three run homer.

The next batter, Josh Donaldson was immediately hit by a pitch. This got the Yankee dugout on their feet and fired up. To the surprise of everybody, the umpires decided to eject Yimi Garcia. Charlie Montoyo and the Blue Jay dugout were livid. Jonathan Loaisiga came on and threw a shutout seventh inning. During that inning he threw a two seamer up and in to Bo Bichette. The Blue Jay dugout was chirping at the umpire after that pitch, and Charlie Montoyo was ejected. Loaisiga started the eighth inning and let the leadoff runner reach base. Chad Green then came on. Green gave up a go-ahead double to Lourdes Gurriel Jr and then a sac fly to Alejandro Kirk. The Blue Jays now led 5-3. Wandy Peralta pitched the ninth and kept the score at 5-3. With one out in the bottom of the ninth down by two runs, Jose Trevino worked a walk to bring the tying runner to the plate. DJ Lemahieu then worked another walk to bring the winning runner to the plate. The winning runner was none other than Aaron Judge. Judge stepped up to the plate against one of the most dominant closers in the game, Jordan Romano. After multiple pitches fouled off, Judge took a 1-2 pitch deep into the Bronx night. He crushed the ball into the second deck to win the game for the Yankees. This was Judge’s first career walk off home run, and the Yankees took game one of the two game set by a score of 6-5.

The Yankees looked to sweep the two game set against their division rival, Toronto Blue Jays. Jameson Taillon got the start in this one. The Blue Jays got on the board first from an RBI fielder’s choice from Teoscar Hernandez. The Yankees took the lead in the fourth inning when Gleyber Torres hit a three run homer to right field to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead. Jameson Taillon would start the sixth inning but be pulled after recording an out but giving up a double. Mike King came on and finished the inning, but he gave up a Matt Chapman sac fly to make it 3-2. Taillon gave the Yankees another great outing. He threw 5.1 innings with two earned runs and four strikeouts. The Yankees added on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth from a clutch Gleyber Torres RBI single.

Mike King started the seventh but got the Yankees into a jam. Boone called on Clay Holmes to get the Yankees out of it. Holmes got a double play to get the Yankees out of the jam. Holmes also pitched a shutout eighth inning. Aroldis Chapman then came on for the save. He gave up a sac fly to George Springer to make it 5-3. The Jays would not score another run and Chapman would complete the save. The Yankees picked up yet another win and another sweep. This 5-3 victory is the Yankees’ fifteenth win in their last seventeen games. The Yankees will now head to Chicago to face the White Sox.
