Yankees Somehow Find a Way To Grab Two Out of Three From The Tigers
The New York Yankees faced off against the Detroit Tigers in a three game set at Comerica Park. The Yankees got off to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first from a lucky lucky break. With the bases loaded and two outs, Josh Donaldson popped the ball up in between home plate and the pitchers mound. The Tigers catcher, Tucker Barnhart could not track the ball, and Tigers’ pitcher, Tyler Alexander put his glove out to catch the ball. The ball fell out of Alexander’s glove, and two runs scored on the error. Gerrit Cole went out in the bottom of the first with a 2-0 lead, and he struck out the side. In the bottom of the second Aaron Hicks hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-0 game. Gerrit Cole put the Tigers right back into the ballgame with his nightmare second inning. Cole walked four batters and gave up two runs on a bases loaded walk and a sac fly. Cole was not even able to make it out of the second inning. Cole’s rough start to the season continues, and he needs to figure it out quickly.
Clarke Schmidt came in for the Yankees and threw 3.1 scoreless innings. Wandy Peralta came in next and threw 1.1 shutout innings. Clay Holmes was next and he threw 0.2 scoreless innings, and he was assisted by a nice play by Josh Donaldson where he threw the game tying runner out at the plate. Next Miguel Castro threw a scoreless eighth inning. The Yankees added on an insurance run in the top of the ninth with a DJ Lemahieu RBI single to make it 4-2. Aroldis Chapman then came on and got the save. The Yankees struggles and Gerrit Cole’s struggles continue, but the Yankees somehow pull out a 4-2 win. The Yankees bullpen was absolutely fantastic as they led the Yanks in Game one of the three game series.
Luis Severino got the start in game two of the three game set in Detroit. Sevy looked to repeat his marvelous performance that he had in his last outing. The Tigers did score first when Victor Reyes hit an RBI single in the second inning. In the third inning Aaron Judge ripped an RBI double to tie the game. Later that inning Anthony Rizzo had an RBI groundout. Severino’s outing finished after five solid innings. Sevy did not have his best stuff, but he gave the Yankees more than a chance to win. He threw five innings while allowing one earned run and three strikeouts. In the top of the sixth the Yankees extended their lead to 3-1 with an Anthony Rizzo solo homer. In the bottom of the sixth Chad Green gave up a game tying two run double to Harold Castro. The Yankees grabbed the lead back in the top of the seventh with an Isiah Kiner-Falefa RBI single. IKF picked up his first Yankee RBI as he’s been swinging the bat better as of late. Jonathan Loaisiga threw a scoreless seventh inning. In the top of the eighth DJ Lemahieu added to the Yankees lead with an RBI fielder’s choice to make it 5-3. Clay Holmes then threw a shutout eighth inning. Then in the ninth Aroldis Chapman got the save. The Yankees clinch the series win over the Tigers.
The Yankees look for the series sweep over the Detroit Tigers as they give Jordan Montgomery the ball in game three of the three game set in Detroit. In the third inning Robbie Grossman gave the Tigers the lead with an RBI single. Monty was rock solid in this game. He was great as he threw six innings with five strikeouts while allowing only one earned run. Sadly the trend continues where the Yankees don’t score for Monty. The Yankee offense seems to go cold every time Monty steps on the mound. The Yankees continue to not be able to hit with runners in scoring position, and The Yankees offense was silent all game today. Miguel Castro threw a scoreless seventh inning, and Lucas Luetge came on for the eighth. After intentionally walking Miguel Cabrera (who’s one hit away from 3,000)
Austin Meadows hits a two run bloop RBI double to make it 3-0 Tigers. The Yankees would not put together a rally as they dropped the final game of the series, and they couldn't complete the sweep. The Yankees had countless opportunities to score in this game, but they continue to be unable to hit with runners in scoring position. This has become a real issue within the Yankees, and the offense has been awful to start the season. The Yankee offense needs to find a way to score some more runs because they are constantly wasting excellent outings from their pitching staff. The Yankees will now head to Cleavland to face off against the Guardians in a three game set.
