The Yankees Sweep as The New Guys Provide a Spark. Are The Yankees Back?

The Yankees looked to continue their recent success as they faced off in a two game set against the Philadelphia Phillies. Domingo German got the start in game one for the Yanks. The Phillies scored first in this one off of a Rhys Hoskins solo homer. In the third Greg Allen roped a triple, and Estevan Florial scored Allen off of a RBI groundout. In the fourth Ronald Torreyes hit a RBI double to take back the lead. In the fifth Greg Allen walked. He then stole second and advanced to third on a fly ball. He then scored on an error. Later that inning Brett Gardner hit a solo home run to take a 3-2 lead. The Yankees added to their lead with a Gary Sanchez solo shot of his own in the sixth.

The Yankees added to their lead with a Gary Sanchez solo shot of his own in the sixth. In the seventh Chad Green struck out Didi Gregorious to escape a bases loaded jam and preserve the lead. In the bottom of the inning Giancarlo Stanton extended the lead with a solo home run to make it 5-2. The Phillies started to crawl back with a Jean Segura RBI single off of Zach Britton in the eighth, but Britton got a double play to escape the inning with only one run allowed. In the bottom of the eighth Estevan Florial added to the lead with his first career homer. The Yankees now lead 6-3 as they handed the ball to Aroldis Chapman for the save. With one away in the ninth Chapman gave up a solo shot to Andrew Mccutchen. After that homer Chapman threw six straight fastballs for strikes to end the game. Chapman picked up his first save of the second half, and the new guys continue to be a huge spark for the Yankees. In this 6-4 win over the Phillies the Yankees showed some very encouraging signs that they have what it takes to turn this season around. In this game they showed speed and situational hitting in which they have lacked all season.

Asher Wojciechowski got his first start in pinstripes as the Yankees looked to pick up their fourth straight series win. The Phillies struck first with a first pitch home run by Jean Segura. In the second Bryce Harper hit a RBI double to take a 2-0 lead. Asher Wojciechowski was pulled after four innings of two run ball in his Yankee debut. In the bottom of the fourth Gleyber Torres smoked a solo homer to cut the deficit to one. Later that inning Greg Allen would continue to be a spark in this lineup as he lined an RBI double.

Albert Abreu came in after Woj, and he pitched 1.2 shutout innings. Justin Wilson entered in a sixth inning jam, and he escaped the jam keeping the game tied at two. In the seventh Estevan Florial reached on a single then stole second. Stanton then scored Florial with an RBI single. Odor then blasted a two run shot deep into the second deck and sent the stadium into a frenzy. Zach Britton came on in the eighth and struggled mightily, but he was not helped by a Gleyber Torres error. Nevertheless Britton was pulled quickly, and Nick Nelson came into his jam. Nelson was unable to save the Yankees as the Phillies put up a three run inning to tie the game. In the top of the ninth Chapman threw a shutout inning to keep the game tied.

The Yanks posed a threat in the bottom of the ninth with runners on second and third with nobody out, but the Yankees were unable to score. Brooks Kriske came on in the top of the tenth, and he was able to put together a clutch inning for the Yankees as the game remained tied. In the bottom of the tenth Gleyber Torres bunted Gary Sanchez over to third. Aaron Boone then pinch hit the righty Ryan Lammare for the lefty Brett Gardner. Lammare then smoked one off the right field wall to win a game.

The Yankees picked up a huge 6-5 win over the Phillies, and the Yanks won their fourth straight series. The Yankees are really playing well with these new guys they have called up. Greg Allen has been incredible with his bat and speed, Estevan Florial’s impact has been huge with his speed and hitting, and Ryan Lammare has swung the bat well and shown scrappiness since being called up. The Yankees have been missing the small ball element all season long, and the new guys are bringing it. Hopefully these guys continue their excellent play in this huge upcoming series against the Red Sox.
