The Yankees Sweep The Tigers Ahead of Series Against Astros
The Yankees look to pounce on the horrific Detroit Tigers and claw their way back to .500. In Game 1 of the series with their ace on the mound, they did just that. The New York Yankees destroyed the Detroit Tigers 10-1 at the Stadium. Gerrit Cole was incredible. Cole went six innings with twelve strikeouts, no walks, and no runs. Cole continued his outstanding start to the season. Luis Cessa, Lucas Luetge, and Wandy Peralta each threw a shutout inning to finish the game.
The Yankees’ offense was firing on all cylinders. Aaron Judge hit two home runs one of them being a grand slam. Aaron Hicks, Clint Frazier, and Rougned Odor each had solo shots of their own. Gio Urshela picked up an RBI single, and Aaron Hicks picked up an RBI double. Giancarlo Stanton also knocked three hits of his own. This was a game that the Yankees needed, and it hopefully is the start of a winning streak.
Jameson Taillon got the start against Detroit as the New York Yankees looked to clinch a series victory. Taillon was fantastic. He went five innings while allowing one run on three hits. He also struck out eight on his way to earning his first win in two years. Jonathan Loasiga came in after Taillon and threw a shutout inning. Justin Wilson came in after Loasiga and struggled. He gave up two runs and did not finish the inning. Chad Green relieved Wilson and he threw 1.1 innings while allowing one run.
Aroldis Chapman finished the game. The Yankees scored six runs off of an RBI double by Aaron Judge and a two RBI single by Judge. Gleyber Torres also added an RBI single and a two RBI single. The Yankees got a nice 6-4 win over the Tigers to clinch the series victory.
Corey Kluber toed the slab in the boogie down Bronx as the New York Yankees looked to complete the sweep of the pitiful Detroit Tigers on Sunday. Kluber was outstanding. He was virtually unhittable. Kluber went 8 flawless innings as he allowed two hits and no runs. The Klubot also collected ten strikeouts. He has now shown massive improvements over the early parts of the season. He seems determined to return to his CY Young form, and while it is not likely that he gets back to that level he still can be a fantastic starter for this team and play a huge role for the Yanks.
The Yankees’ bats were quiet, but they did enough. The Yankees collected two runs early in the game off of a Kyle Higashioka RBI double and a Brett Gardner sac fly. Those two runs proved to be all that was needed to win the game. Aroldis Chapman pitched the ninth after Kluber dealt for eight. Chapman threw a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts.
The Yankees completed the sweep over the Detroit Tigers with this 2-0 win, and they picked up their first sweep of the season. The Yankees will look to get revenge on the Houston Astros as they face off starting on Tuesday, May 4th.
