Yankees Bats Come Alive in Three Game Sweep of the Orioles

Luis Severino got the start for the Yankees in game one of a three game set against the Orioles at Yankee Stadium. The Yanks were looking for revenge after they dropped their first series against Baltimore. Anthony Rizzo gave the Yankees a three run lead in the third inning when he hit a three run shot right over the short porch. Joey Gallo tacked on another run in the fourth with his first homer of the season. In the fifth inning Anthony Rizzo hit another homer to make it 6-0. On the other side of the ball, Luis Severino was solid. He was scoreless through five innings, but in the sixth he gave up a three run homer to Anthony Santander. Sevy finished with six innings pitched with five strikeouts and three earned runs. Clay Holmes came on in the seventh and gave up an RBI single to Ramon Urias to make it 6-4. The Yankees added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh when Giancarlo Stanton hit an RBI single, and Gleyber Torres then hit a three run triple to add on some much needed insurance runs. In the eighth Lucas Luetge gave up an RBI single to make it 10-5. Jonathan Loaisiga came in and gave up a three run home run to Austin Hays to make the score 10-8. But the Yankees came striking back in the eighth. On his thirtieth birthday, Aaron Judge hit a solo shot to make it 11-8. This was followed by Anthony Rizzo’s third home run of the night to make it 12-8. This was the first time Rizzo has ever hit three home runs in a game in his career. He now leads the MLB in home runs. Aroldis Chapman completed the save in the ninth. The Yankees took game one by a score of 12-8 in a wild game.

Jordan Montgomery got the start in game two of the series. The Yankees got on the board early with a two run homer from Giancarlo Stanton. This was Stanton’s 350th home run of his career, and he became the seventh fastest player to reach 350 home runs. Montgomery was cruising through five and looked fantastic, but in the sixth he gave up a game tying two run home run to Anthony Santander. Monty was pulled after a hit by pitch later that inning. His final statline was 5.2 innings pitched with four strikeouts and two earned runs. He was solid all night long, and one pitch affected his night. Mike King came on and threw 2.1 shutout innings in relief. In the bottom of the sixth Giancarlo Stanton hit a sac fly to make it 3-2. In the bottom of the seventh Joey Gallo hit a solo shot to make it 4-2. This was back to back games with a home run as he hopefully starts to turn his season around. Later that inning Isiah Kiner - Falefa scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-2. Clay Holmes came on in the ninth to secure the 5-2 win over the Orioles as the Yankees clinched the series victory.

Jameson Taillon got the start in game three of the three game set against the Orioles. The Yankees look for the sweep at the stadium. The Orioles got on the board first with a Kelvin Gutierrez RBI single, and in the third Trey Mancini hit an RBI groundout to make it 2-0. The Yanks came striking back with a four run fifth inning. Marwin Gonzalez hit an RBI double, Aaron Judge hit an RBI single, Anthony Rizzo hit an RBI single, and Giancarlo Stanton had an RBI single of his own to make it 4-2. The Yankees made it 5-2 in the sixth with a Marwin Gonzalez sac fly. Jameson Taillon did not have his best stuff tonight, but he battled. He did not turn in one of his best starts, but he gave the Yankees a chance to win the ballgame. He finished with 4.2 innings pitched with two earned runs. Miguel Castro came on and got the final out of the fifth. This was followed by 0.2 innings from Wandy Peralta and 1.1 innings from Jonathan Loaisiga. Josh Donaldson made it 6-2 from an RBI single in the seventh.

Chad Green had a scoreless inning in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth Tim Locastro scored on a wild pitch, and then Aaron Judge smoked a three run home run to really blow it open. The Yankees now led 10-2. Ron Marinaccio came on for the ninth and struggled. He could only record two outs and allowed three runs. Lucas Luetge came on to get the final out of the game. Nevertheless the Yankees get the win and complete the sweep of the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees offense has been in a fantastic groove. The pitching has continued to be good, and the Yanks are rolling. They look to keep it going as they head into a three game set against the Kansas City Royals.
