Yankees Stay Hot as They Sweep the Royals
The Yankees headed to Kansas City to face off against the Royals in a three game set. Nestor Cortes Jr got the start in game one. The Yanks gave Nestor an early lead with a two run home run from Anthony Rizzo, and a solo homer from Giancarlo Stanton in the first inning. The Royals answered with a Salvador Perez RBI double to make it 3-1. In the second inning Michael A. Taylor hit an RBI single to make it 3-2. Nestor did not have his best stuff in this one, but he gave the Yankees more than a chance to win. He grinded his way through five solid innings as he worked in and out of jams. He gave up eighth hits through five innings but somehow only allowed two runs and finished with three strikeouts. Jonathan Loaisiga came on and pitched the sixth. In the top of the seventh the Yankees really blew the game wide open. DJ Lemahieu hit an RBI single, and then Aaron Judge blasted a three run homer to make it 7-2. Chad Green pitched the bottom of the seventh, and in the eighth the Yankees kept adding to their lead. Gleyber Torres ripped a two run homer to make it 9-2, and then Kyle Higashioka hit a three run double to make it 12-2. Lucas Luetge came on to pitch the eighth inning, and the game would end after the eighth inning due to rain. The offensive explosion in the late innings propelled the Yankees to their seventh win in a row as they took game one of the three game set against the Royals.
Gerrit Cole looked to secure the series win for the Yankees as he got the ball in game two of the three game set against the Royals. The Yankees scored first when Gleyber Torres scored on Isiah Kiner-Falefa’s double play in the second inning. The Yankees would make it 2-0 in the third inning from a Gleyber Torres sac fly. In the fourth inning Isiah Kiner-Falefa would hit a sac fly of his own to make it 3-0. On the other side of the ball Gerrit Cole was dealing. Cole threw six shutout innings with six strikeouts. This was Cole’s second excellent start in a row as he looks to be pitching like the ace that he is again. Miguel Castro came on and pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Clay Holmes then threw a shutout eighth inning, and Aroldis Chapman got the save. The Yankees did not have another offensive outburst, but they clawed their way to get three runs across the board. Those three runs proved to be enough because of the excellent pitching performance from Cole and the bullpen. This 3-0 win was the Yankees eighth win in a row, and they secured the series win over the Royals in Kansas City.
The Yankees look to complete their third sweep in a row as they face off against the Kansas City Royals in the third game of a three game set. The Yankees got off to a 1-0 lead when Aaron Judge absolutely destroyed a baseball for a solo home run in the first. Luis Severino toed the slab for the Yankees in this one. Sevy in this one. In the bottom of the third Sevy allowed three runs. Michael A. Taylor tied up the game with a solo homer, the Royals scored on a wild pitch, and Carlos Santana hit an RBI double to make it 3-1. In the fourth the Royals added another run on a throwing error from Josh Donaldson. The Yanks came clawing back in the fifth when Isiah Kiner - Falefa ripped an RBI double. DJ Lemahieu then hit an RBI single to make it 4-3. Sevy finished his night after five innings. He was not great in this one, but he battled his way through five huge innings for the Yankees.
Clarke Schmidt then came on for the sixth. In the top of the seventh the Yanks tied the game up with an RBI groundout from Aaron Judge and a RBI fielder’s choice from Josh Donaldson. Lucas Luetge came on and got into a jam. Mike King then came in and threw 1.2 huge scoreless innings. Aaron Judge then gave the Yankees a much needed insurance run with his second homer of the game to make it 6-4. Aroldis Chapman came on and got the save. This 6-4 comeback win over the Royals completed the sweep. The Yanks have won nine in a row and swept the last three series. They look to keep it going as they face off against the division rival Toronto Blue Jays in a three game set.
