Yankees Do Just Enough to Pick Up Series Victory Over the Orioles
The New York Yankees faced off against the Baltimore Orioles in a three game set at Yankee Stadium. Gerrit Cole got the start in game one for the Yanks. The Yanks got on the board in the first with an Aaron Judge solo homer. It became 2-0 in the second when Jose Trevino hit an RBI single. Gerrit Cole got into trouble in the third. The Orioles put up four runs on Cole in a brutal third inning. Aaron Judge would come striking back when he hit the game tying home run in the fifth for his second homer of the night. In the top of the sixth the Orioles took back the lead from a Robinson Chirinos solo home run. Cole would go incredibly deep into this game. He gave the bullpen a rest as he went eight innings in this one. Only problem was he gave up five runs. His final statline was eight innings pitched with five earned runs and eleven strikeouts with no walks. Wandy Peralta would come on to pitch the top of the ninth, and he gave up another run on a Chirinos sac fly to make it 6-4. The Yankees would not plate any runs in the ninth as they dropped game one of the series by a score of 6-4.
Jordan Montgomery would get the ball in game two of the three game set. The Yankees would score first with an Anthony Rizzo solo shot in the first. It became two nothing when Jose Trevino hit a solo shot of his own in the third. In the fourth Gleyber Torres made it 3-0 with another solo home run. The Orioles would get on the board in the fifth with an RBI groundout from Rougned Odor. Jordan Montgomery would start the seventh, but he was pulled after a leadoff homer to Austin Hays to make it 3-2. Monty turned in yet another solid outing. He was really sharp in this one. Monty threw six innings with two earned runs with five strikeouts and no walks. Mike King came on in relief, and he did not have it. He continued his recent struggles in this one. He gave up a three run home run to Rougned Odor to give the Orioles a 5-3 lead. He would only record two outs in the innings before being pulled, and Lucas Luetge came in to get the final out of the seventh inning. The Yankees got one of the runs back with a Gleyber Torres solo homer to bring the Yankees within one. Later that inning Jose Trevino would come up clutch with a big two out two strike opposite field single to tie the game.
Clay Holmes came on and threw a scoreless eighth inning. Wandy Peralta kept it tied in the ninth. Clarke Schmidt took the mound as this game headed to extras. After a scoreless tenth from both sides the Orioles took a 6-5 lead in the eleventh from an Austin Hays’ groundout. The Yankees would rally in the bottom of the eleventh when Isiah Kiner - Falefa came up with a huge game tying single, and Jose Trevino delivered the walk off single. The Yankees won this exhilarating game by a score of 7-6. Jose Trevino came up with big hits all game long, and this will forever be known as the Jose Trevino game.
J.P Sears made his first career start in the rubber match of this three game set against the Orioles. The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning from a Miguel Andujar RBI single, and it became 2-0 when Gleyber Torres scored on a throwing error. Two runs was more than enough for the unfazed rookie. J.P Sears was incredible in his first career start. Sears threw five innings with five strikeouts and no earned runs. He turned in a really nice start when the Yankees were in need of one. Ron Marinaccio came on and threw two scoreless innings of relief. Lucas Luetge came on for the eighth but only recorded two outs. Miguel Castro came on for the final out of the eighth. The Yankees called on Clay Holmes to get the save in this 2-0 ballgame. Holmes picked up the save and sealed the Yankees 2-0 win over the Orioles. Despite the lack of offense, this win clinched the Yankees series victory over the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees will now head to Tropicana Park to face off against the Tampa Bay Rays in a huge four game set.
