Yankees Drop Series to White Sox Despite Great Starting Pitching Performances

The Yankees headed back to the Bronx to face off against the Chicago White Sox in a three game set. Nestor Cortes Jr got the start in game one. The Yankees got on the board first with an Isiah Kiner - Falefa RBI single in the second. Later that inning, DJ Lemahieu added four runs to the Yankee lead with a grand slam! The Yanks now led 5-0. The White Sox cut into the lead in the third inning with a Jose Abreu three run homer to make it 5-3. The Yankees added another run to their lead in the third with an RBI groundout from Josh Donaldson to make it 6-3. Nestor’s night would end after five solid innings with three earned runs and seven strikeouts. Nestor was great other than the pitch to Abreu. Mike King came on for the sixth and he gave up two runs on a Leury Garcia RBI double and a Josh Harrison RBI double. The Yankees extended their lead in the sixth with an Anthony Rizzo sac fly in the bottom of the sixth. The score was now 7-5. Jonathan Loaisiga threw a scoreless seventh. Miguel Castro came on for the eighth and got two outs, but Clay Holmes recorded the third out. Holmes went back out for the ninth to pick up the four out save. The Yankees won game one of the three game set by a score of 7-5.

Jameson Taillon got the start for the Yankees in game two of the three game set and game one of the doubleheader. Taillon was fantastic in this one. He threw seven innings while only allowing one run. The run came in the fourth from a Yasmani Grandal RBI single. Other than that Jamo was electric. He threw seven innings with one earned run and sevens strikeouts. Unfortunately, the Yankee offense could not get anything going. Johnny Cueto was shutting them down. Lucas Luetge pitched a scoreless eighth for the Yankees, and the Yanks offense would tie the game in the bottom of the eighth. Aaron Judge launched a dramatic solo bomb into the upper deck to tie the ball game. Aroldis Chapman came on in the ninth, and he struggled yet again. AJ Pollock clipped Chappy for the go ahead home run. Adam Engel would also add on another run with an RBI double. Chapman was pulled from the game after only getting one out but allowing two runs. Ron Marinaccio got the final two outs of the inning. The Yankees would not rally in the ninth as they dropped game two of the three game set and game one of the doubleheader by a score of 3-1. Despite the strong pitching performance, the Yankees could not get it done.

Luis Severino toed the slab in the rubber game of the three game set and the second game of the doubleheader. Luis Severino was absolutely unreal in this one. He threw seven shutout innings with five strikeouts and no walks. Sevy delivered an amazing performance in this outing. On the other side of the ball, the Yankee offense was being completely shut down by Michael Kopech. Kopech was no hitting the Yankees until Rob Brantly roped a double to break it up in the sixth. The Yankees called on Loaisiga in the eighth and struggled. He gave up a go-ahead single to Andrew Vaughn and another RBI single to Reese McGuire. Miguel Castro then came on with two of Loaisiga’s base runners. Castro gave up a three run homer to Tim Anderson to make it a 5-0 game. The Yankees would not produce any sort of offense in this one as they went down by a score of 5-0. They dropped both games of the double header despite two incredible starting pitching performances, and they dropped the series. Next the Yankees will now face off against the Orioles again in a three game series.
