Yankees Dominate in Sweep Over Detroit Tigers

Gerrit Cole took the mound in game one of a three game set against the Tigers. The Yankees gave him plenty of run support in this one. They took a 2-0 lead in the third from a Jose Trevino solo homer and an Aaron Judge solo homer. It became 4-0 in the fourth from a Jose Trevino two RBI triple. Later that inning Aaron Hicks hit an RBI single to make it 5-0.  In the bottom of the fifth the Yankees really blew the game open. Anthony Rizzo hit a three run homer, Matt Carpenter hit a two run home run, and DJ Lemahieu hit a two run single to make it 12-0. Judge made it 13-0 with an RBI single in the eighth. On the other side of the ball Gerrit Cole was terrific. He was lights out in this one. Cole took a perfect game into the seventh, but it was broken up by a single. Cole pitched seven shutout innings while allowing two hits and picked up nine strikeouts. Manny Banuelos came in and made his Yankee debut. He pitched the eighth and ninth innings to seal the victory.

Luis Severino got the ball in game two against the Tigers. He was given an early run when Aaron Judge hit a leadoff home run to make it 1-0. Anthony Rizzo made it 2-0 in the sixth with a solo shot of his own. Josh Donaldson made it 3-0 with a sac fly in the eighth. On the other side of the ball Severino was outstanding. He was absolutely electric in this one. Sevy threw seven shutout innings with ten strikeouts and only allowing one hit. Mike King pitched the eighth, and Clay Holmes pitched the ninth to cap off the 3-0 victory.

Jordan Montgomery got the start as the Yankees looked to complete the sweep of the Tigers. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth from a Javier Baez RBI single. Later that inning Daz Cameron hit an RBI single to make it 2-0. The Yankees tied it up in the fifth on a Joey Gallo two run homer. Monty would turn in a very solid outing in this one. Monty threw 6.1 innings with five strikeouts while allowing two earned runs. Clarke Schmidt came on and finished the seventh inning. The Yankees made it 3-2 in the seventh on an RBI walk from DJ Lemahieu. Clarke Schmidt allowed a double in the eighth and was pulled. Miguel Castro came on for the Yanks. He allowed a game tying RBI single to Miguel Cabrera. Javier Baez then made it 4-3 with an RBI hit. The Yankees looked to tie the game up in the eighth. With one out Anthony Rizzo stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Gleyber Torres stepped up with the game tying runner on third and one out. He hit a soft grounder to third, and Rizzo scored on the play to tie up the game. Wandy Peralta threw a shutout ninth inning. The Yanks were unable to score in the bottom of the ninth, so the game went to extras. Michael King came on in the tenth, and was incredible. King struck out the side to keep the leading runner on second. The Yankees won it in the tenth on a walk off sac fly from Josh Donaldson. This 5-4 Yankees win completed the sweep of the Detroit Tigers. The Yankees will now head to Minnesota to face off against the Twins in a three game set.
