Yankees Continue to Play Great as They Take Series from Toronto
The Yankees headed to Toronto to face off against the Blue Jays in a three game set. Jordan Montgomery got the start in game one. The Blue Jays got on the board first with an RBI single from Gabriel Moreno in the second. The Yankees tied it up in the fourth from a Gleyber Torres RBI double. The Yanks took a lead from a Kyle Higashioka RBI groundout to make it 2-1. The Yankees really added onto their lead with an incredible fifth inning. It started off with a two run homer from Giancarlo Stanton. DJ Lemahieu went deep in the very next at bat to make it 5-1. Later that inning Joey Gallo ripped an RBI double to make it 6-1. The inning was capped off by a grand slam from Anthony Rizzo to really blow it open and make it 10-1. Alejandro Kirk got a solo homer off Monty in the sixth to make it 10-2. Montgomery turned in another great outing in this one. He went six innings while allowing two earned runs. Manny Banuelos came on in the seventh. Gabriel Moreno got the Jays their third run with an RBI single in the seventh. Banuelos threw 1.1 innings, and Miguel Castro finished the eighth inning. In the top of the ninth Joey Gallo added to the Jays’ misery with a two run homer to make it 12-3. Lucas Luetge came on for the ninth to finish the game out. The Yankees took game one by a score of 12-3.
Jameson Taillon toed the slab in game two of the three game set at the Rogers Center. Alec Monoah got the start for Toronto. It was a solid pitchers’ duel until the top of the fourth when Aaron Hicks hit a huge two out bases clearing double to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead. This was a huge at bat for not only the Yankees but Hicks as well. Hopefully this big hit can help turn Hicks’s season around. The Yanks added another run in the sixth with an Isiah Kiner-Falefa RBI double. Taillon’s outing would end after 5.2 great innings. Taillon had yet another fantastic performance. He threw 5.2 shutout innings with eight strikeouts. Mike King came on and threw two scoreless innings. Then the ball was handed to Clay Holmes who recorded the last four outs of the ball game. This 4-0 win secured the series win for the Yanks.
Luis Severino took the ball as the Yankees looked to complete the sweep over the Blue Jays in Toronto. Yusei Kikuchi got the start for Toronto. The Jays got off to an early lead with a two run homer from Vladamir Guerrero Jr in the first. The Yankees got on the board in the second with a solo homer from Gleyber Torres, and then in the third Josh Donaldson put the Yankees ahead with a two run bomb after he was drilled by a pitch in his first at bat. The Yankees added to their lead in the fifth when Aaron Judge hit an RBI double to make it 4-2, and Gleyber Torres stayed hot with a two run double of his own to make it 6-2. George Springer made it 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer. The Yankees then added to their lead again in the sixth with back to back homers from Kyle Higashioka and Marwin Gonzalez to make it 8-3. Luis Severino went back out for the sixth but allowed two baserunners and did not record an out. Miguel Castro came on. He recorded two outs, but then allowed a walk. This brought up Lourdes Gurriel Jr with two outs and the bases loaded. Gurriel Jr hit a grand slam to make it a 8-7 game. Wandy Peralta came on to get the final out of the inning. Severino’s was not bad in this one, but his statline was blown up by the grand slam.
This wasn’t one of Sevy’s best outings, but he was solid. Although his final statline is not pretty as he pitched five innings with five earned runs, he did collect nine strikeouts. In the seventh the Blue Jays took the lead off of a three run homer from Teoscar Hernandez off Wandy Peralta. Ron Marinaccio came in to get the final out of the inning. In the top of the eighth Anthony Rizzo hit a pinch hit solo home run to cut the deficit to one run. Marinaccio threw a scoreless eighth inning to keep it at a one run ballgame. The Yankees threatened in the ninth as they headed runners on second and third with two outs as Anthony Rizzo stepped back up to the plate. Rizzo grounded out to end the ballgame. The Yankees dropped the final game by a score of 10-9. The Yankees still took two out of three from the Jays and continue to play fantastic baseball. The Yanks now head to Tampa to face off against the Rays in a three game set.
