Yankees Split Insane Series Against the Dangerous Houston Astros
The Houston Astros came to Yankee Stadium to face off against the New York Yankees in a four game set. The Astros and Yankees have the two best records in the American League, and they were facing off for the first time. Jameson Taillon got the start for the Yankees in game one. He got off to a rough start when Alex Bregman clipped him for a three run home run in the first. The Yankees came striking back in the bottom of the first when Giancarlo Stanton hit a huge three run homer to tie the game. The Astros grabbed the lead back in the third when Yordan Alvarez hit a three run homer to take a 6-3 lead. Taillon struggled in this one. He ended up throwing 5.2 innings with six earned runs. Lucas Luetge came in and threw 1.1 scoreless innings. Albert Abreu made his season debut for the Yankees and threw a shutout seventh inning. Miguel Castro came on and pitched the eighth. The Yankees headed into the bottom of the ninth down 6-3. The Yankees got the first two runners on, and Aaron Hicks stepped up to the plate. Hicks drove a ball deep into the right field bleachers for a no doubter. The game was now tied 6-6. Later that inning Aaron Judge stepped up to the plate with runners on first and second with two outs. On a 3-0 pitch Judge ripped a ball down the left field line to win it for the Yanks. This 7-6 victory was one of the best victories of the season for the Yankees so far. They grabbed game one of the four game set against their fiercest AL competitor.
Luis Severino got the start for the Yankees in game two. Severino was dealing until the sixth inning. In the sixth Kyle Tucker hit a three run homer to take a 3-0 lead for the Astros. The Yankees grabbed one run back in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer from Giancarlo Stanton. Ron Marinaccio pitched a scoreless seventh, and Miguel Castro did the eighth. Wandy Peralta then threw a shutout ninth to keep it a two run game. The Yankees were unable to tie it in the ninth and dropped game two by a score of 3-1.
Gerrit Cole got the start for the Yankees, and Cristian Javier started for the Astros. The two of them were in an extreme pitchers duel. J.J Matijevic hit a go-ahead solo home run off Cole in the seventh to give the Astros a 1-0 lead. On the other side of the ball the Yankees were getting absolutely nothing. Javier threw seven no hit innings against the Yankees before being pulled. Michael King came on for the eighth, and he gave up a solo homer to Jose Altuve to make it 2-0. Hector Nerris pitched the eighth and kept the no-hitter in tact. Lucas Luetge came on for the Yankees in the ninth. He gave up an RBI single to Yuli Gurriel to make it 3-0. Ryan Pressley came on for the ninth to get the save for the Astros and complete the no hitter. The Yankees would not get a hit as they lose game three of the series by a score of 3-1 and they get no hit.
The New York Yankees needed to bounce back after the no hitter in game three and find a way to split this series. Nestor Cortes Jr got the start for the Yankees. He got off to a horrible start when Jose Altuve took him deep on the very first pitch of the game. In the fourth the Astros added to their lead when Mauricio Dubon hit a two run single to make it 3-0. Nestor struggled through this outing. He tossed 5 innings with three earned runs. Miguel Castro threw the sixth and seventh innings. The Yankees were in a no hit scare yet again. They had no hits through six innings. Giancarlo Stanton got the Yankees first hit in the seventh with a solo homer. This struck life into the Yankee dugout and Yankee Stadium. Wandy Peralta came on and threw a scoreless eighth inning. The Yankees tied the ballgame in the bottom of the eighth when DJ Lemahieu drove a ball to left field for a game tying two run homer. The Yankees were on the verge of being no-hit in back to back games, but instead Stanton and Lemahieu each hit huge homers for the Yankees to tie the ballgame. Clay Holmes came on and kept it tied in the ninth. The Yankees had Gleyber Torres on third and Aaron Hicks at the plate with one out. Hicks struck out and Torred fell down in the base path allowing the Astros to pick him off to end the inning. Michael King held the Astros in the tenth, giving the Yanks a chance to hit with the game tied in the bottom of the tenth. Aaron Judge stepped up with runners on the corners and two outs. Judge hit a walk off three run homer into the left field bullpen. Judge’s huge home run capped off an amazing comeback from the Yankees. The Yanks continue to show no quit and their magical season continues. This Yankees comeback allowed the Yankees to split the big series against the Houston Astros and end off on a high note. Next the Yankees will face off against the Athletics in a three game set.
