Yankees Drop Two to the Brewers in Rough Series

The New York Yankees headed to Milwaukee to face off against the Brewers in a three game set. Frankie Montas got the start for the Yankees in game one. The Yankees got off to an early lead when Josh Donaldson hit a sac fly in the first to make it 1-0. Isaiah Kiner-Falefa then hit an RBI single to make it 2-0, and Marwin Gonzalez followed that with another RBI single to make it 3-0. The Yankees made it 5-0 in the second when Josh Donaldson hit an RBI groundout, and a second run scored on a throwing error. Montas gave up a three run homer to Willy Adames to make it 5-3 in the second. Montas struggled again in this one. He has not found his footing in a Yankee uniform. He was pulled after 3.1 innings. Lucas Leutge came on in the fourth. He gave up an RBI double to Willy Adames to make it 5-4. That run was Montas’s earned run. Rowdy Tellez then hit a game tying sac fly later that inning. Luetge was pulled after only recording one out, and Greg Weissert came on to record the final out of the inning. Domingo German came on in the fifth and tossed 1.2 shutout innings in relief. Wandy Peralta got the final out of the sixth. Lou Trivino threw a scoreless seventh inning. Jonathan Loaisiga came on for the eighth. The Brewers took the lead on an error by Isiah Kiner-Falefa. The Yankees tied up the game in the top of the ninth off of a Josh Donaldson solo homer. Clay Holmes came on for the ninth to keep it a tie ballgame. The  Brewers walked it off in the ninth off of a Garrett Mitchell RBI single. The Yankees drop a heartbreaker in game one of the three game set.

Jameson Taillon took the ball for the Yankees in game two of the three game set against the Brewers in Milwaukee. The Brewers took a 3-0 lead in the third off of a three run home run by Willy Adames. The Yanks got on the board in the fourth when Josh Donaldson hit another solo homer. The Brewers made it 4-1 in the fifth off of a Christian Yelich RBI double. Taillon was pulled after five innings with four earned runs. Greg Weissert, Aroldis Chapman, and Ron Marinaccio all tossed scoreless innings in relief. The Yankees offense was shut down by Brandon Woodruff as he tossed eight innings and only gave up the Donaldson homer. Devin Williams got the save for the Brewers as the Yankees were unable to push anything across in the ninth. They drop game two of the series as the Brewers take the series victory over the Yankees.

The Yankees looked to salvage the final game of this rough three game series in Milwaukee. Gerrit Cole toed the slab for the Yankees. The Brewers got to Cole early when Kolten Wong blasted a three run homer in the first. The Yankees got on the board in the second from an Oswaldo Cabrera solo homer to make it 3-1. The Brewers got that run back when Tyrone Taylor made it 4-1 in the bottom of the second from his solo shot. The Yankees chipped away at the lead in the third when Aaron Judge blasted his 58th homer of the season to make it 4-2, and Anthony Rizzo hit a solo shot of his own in his first game back to make it 4-3. The Yankees tied it up in fifth from a Giancarlo Stanton RBI fielder’s choice. They took the lead later that inning from an Oswaldo Cabrera RBI single to make it 5-4. Kyle Higashioka then added some much needed insurance runs with a two run single to make it 7-4. Cole’s outing ended after five innings with eight strikeouts and four earned runs. Clarke Schmidt threw the sixth inning in relief. Kyle Higashioka picked up another RBI on the RBI groundout in the seventh to make it 8-4. Aaron Hicks hit a solo homer of his own later that inning to make it 9-4.

Aaron Judge then hit his 59th homer of the season to make it 10-4. Clarke Schmidt threw a scoreless seventh. Clarke Schmidt came back out for the eighth but gave up a two run shot to Rowdy Tellez to make it 10-6. Jonathan Loaisiga came on and got out of that inning. Aaron Judge continued his monstrous tear in the top of the ninth when he ripped a two RBI double to make it 12-6. Wandy Peralta came out for the ninth. He loaded the bases without recording an out. Clay Holmes was then called on to finish the game. Holmes then allowed two of Peralta’s runners to score on the RBI double by Jace Peterson. Holmes then recorded the final out to secure the victory for the Yanks. The Yankees dropped the first two games but salvaged the last one. They will now head to Pittsburgh to face off against the Pirates in a two game set starting on Tuesday.
