Yankees Grab Two Out of Three From Cleveland Guardians

The New York Yankees headed to Cleveland to face off against the Guardians in a three game set. Gerrit Cole got the start in game one of the series and double header. Josh Naylor and Franmil Reyes hit back to back homers off Cole in the second to give the Guardians a 2-0 lead. The Yankees took the lead in a big third inning. DJ Lemahieu got the Yanks on the board with a solo shot, Miguel Andujar tied it up with an RBI single, and Aaron Hicks gave the Yanks the lead with a two RBI single. The Yankees added to their lead in the sixth when Matt Carpenter hit a two run homer. Later that inning Gleyber Torres hit a two RBI single to make it 8-2. Gerrit Cole finished his solid starts with six innings pitched and two earned runs. In the top of the seventh Matt Carpenter made it 9-2 with an RBI single, and later that inning Hicks scored on a double play to make it 10-2. Aroldis Chapman came on in the seventh and was pulled after he walked three straight batters and did not record an out. Ron Marinaccio came into the game with bases loaded and nobody out. The Guardians scored twice on RBI groundouts to make it a 10-4 game. In the top of the eighth Torres hit an RBI groundout to make it 11-4. Lucas Luetge pitched a scoreless eighth. The Yanks kept adding to their lead with back to back homers from Matt Carpenter and Jose Trevino to make it 13-4. Ryan Weber threw a shutout ninth inning to close out the game.

Nestor Cortes Jr took the ball for the Yankees in game two of the series and doubleheader. Cortes got off to a rough start when Ahmed Rosario hit a leadoff home run to give the Guardians an early 1-0 lead. Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton went back to back in the fourth to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead. Nestor gave the Yankees a great six innings in this one. He tossed six innings of one run ball with six strikeouts. The Yankees added to their lead in the seventh with a RBI double from Josh Donaldson, an RBI single from Isiah Kiner - Falefa, and a sac fly from Kyle Higashioka. Michael King threw two scoreless innings for the Yanks, and Wandy Peralta came in for the ninth. Peralta struggled and exited the game with bases loaded and two outs. Clay Holmes came on for the final out, and he got the out to win the game for the Yanks. This 6-1 win allowed the Yankees to sweep the double header and clinch the series victory.

The Yankees looked to complete the sweep in game three against the Guardians. Jordan Montgomery toed the slab in this one. Cleveland took a 1-0 lead in the fourth from a Franmil Reyes homer. Triston Mackenzie completely shutdown the Yankees in this one. He threw seven scoreless innings. Monty was solid for the Yanks, but he received no run support. Monty threw five innings with one earned run and eight strikeouts. After Montgomery exited the game, J.P Sears came on and threw 2.2 innings. He did not allow a run, but he left with his runner on base. Albert Abreu came on and allowed the inherited runner to score on an RBI single by Franmil Reyes. The Yankees headed into the ninth down 2-0. Aaron Hicks stepped up with bases loaded and two outs. He grounded out to second to end the ballgame. The Yankees dropped this one by a score of 2-0. The Yanks could not complete the sweep, but they did win the series. The Yankees will now head to Pittsburgh to face off against the Pirates.
