The Yankees Somehow Snag Two Out of Three in Kansas City
Jameson Taillon got the start in Game one of a three game set against the Royals in Kansas City. Taillon was fabulous in this one as he threw six shutout innings with four strikeouts. The Yankees broke a scoreless tie in the seventh by a Luke Voit RBI single. Jonathan Loaisiga came in for the seventh with a runner on first. An E1 allowed the runner to move to second, and a balk allowed the runner to move to third. A sac fly allowed that runner to score and tie the game. In the eighth the Yanks took the lead back with an Aaron Judge RBI single. Chad Green came in for the eighth with runners on and gave up a game tying single to Andrew Benintendi. A Luke Voit ninth inning homer would take the lead back for the Yankees. Zack Britton blew a save in the ninth, and the Royals tied the game by a Nick Lopez single.
In the top of the tenth Kyle Higashioka hit a go-ahead sac fly. Brett Gardner would provide an insurance run from an RBI single later that inning. Clay Holmes pitched the tenth, and he gave the lead right back by way of a Jarrod Dyson sac fly and a Hanser Alberto single. In the top of the eleventh DJ Lemahieu lined a go ahead double. Later that inning Gardner would rope a two run single to provide some much needed breathing room for the Yanks. Wandy Peralta came on for the save. He gave up a run by a Edward Oliver RBI single. Peralta would bear down and pick up the save for the Yanks. This wild 8-6 win was one of the craziest games in recent memory. Thankfully the Yankees picked up the win to grab the first game of the series.
Nestor Cortes Jr toed the slab in Game two of the series. In the first inning Salvador Perez hit a two run home run. The Yankees would get one by a passed ball in the third. In the fourth the Yanks would grab the lead by a Kyle Higashioka two run homer. The game would be tied as Whit Merrifield scored on Kyle Higashioka’s second error of the night. In the sixth DJ would take the lead back for the Yankees as he lined an RBI single. Salvy Perez would tie the game back up with his second homer of the night off Cortes in the sixth. Stephen Ridings would come in after Cortes, and he struggled. He gave up a go ahead RBI double in the sixth to Hunter Dozier. In the seventh the Royals scored another run by a Hanser Alberto sac bunt, and a throwing error by Ridings. They would get another run on a Nicky Lopez sac bunt. The Royals would make it 8-4 on a Hanser Alberto sac fly. The Yankees would not pose a comeback and they dropped Game two by a 8-4 score. The Yankees sloppy defense was their detriment as it led to them dropping Game two of the series.
The Yankees got off to a nice start in the rubber game as Luke Voit dropped a two run single in the first. Later in the first Rougned Odor would make it 3-0 by an RBI single. Lucas Luetge made his first start this season in this game. Salvy Perez got the Royals on the board by an RBI groundout in the first. The Yanks added to their lead by a DJ Lemahieu in the fourth. Later that inning Aaron Judge would make it 5-1 from an Aaron Judge RBI single. In the fifth Nicky Lopez had an RBI grounder to make it 5-2. No more runs would be scored in this game, and the bullpen would be solid. Chad Green, Jonathan Loaisiga, and Zack Britton would each throw shutout innings to close it. Britton would pick up the save. This 5-2 win allowed the Yankees to keep winning series, and the Yankees are heading into the Field of Dreams Game in Iowa against the White Sox on a good note.
