Yankees Get Swept in Brutal Series vs the Cardinals

The New York Yankees headed to St. Louis to face off against the Cardinals in a three game set. The Yankees got on the board early with an RBI single from Josh Donaldson. Nestor Cortes Jr got the start for the Yankees in game one. The Cardinals tied it up in the second with a Yadier Molina RBI single. The Yankees grabbed the lead back in the third with an RBI double from Josh Donaldson. They added to their lead in the fifth when Gleyber Torres hit an RBI single to make it 3-1. Cortes was taken out after 5.1 solid innings. He was pulled after allowing runners on base. Albert Abreu then came in. Abreu gave up an RBI single to Tyler O’Neil to make it 3-2. Abreu was pulled after only recording one out. Scott Effros came in and tossed 1.1 scoreless innings. The Yankees went to Clay Holmes with a one run lead in the eighth inning. Holmes gave up a two run double to Paul DeJong. The Yankees now trailed 4-3 heading into the ninth. The Yanks headed into the ninth down by one. The Yankees were unable to plate across a run in the ninth as they dropped a very winnable game one of the series to the Cardinals by a score of 4-3.

Domingo German got the start for the Yankees in game two. The Cardinals got an early 1-0 lead when Nolan Arenado hit an RBI single in the first. German was solid after the first inning. He ended up throwing five innings with only one earned run in this one. Ron Marinaccio started the sixth and got two outs. Lou Trivino came in and tossed 1.1 scoreless innings. Aroldis Chapman then threw a shutout eighth inning. On the other side of the ball the Yankees were facing their old friend Jordan Montgomery. Monty was making his first start as a Cardinal, and it coincidentally was against the Yankees. Monty was great against the Yanks. He threw five shutout innings. The Yankees could not get to the bullpen either. The Cardinals bullpen completely shutdown the Yankees. The Yankees were unable to plate a run in this one as they dropped this game by a score of 1-0.

The Yankees looked to salvage the final game of the three game set against the Cardinals. The Yankees got on the board early with a Matt Carpenter sac fly in the first. Frankie Montas was making his first start as a Yankee in this one. Montas gave up an RBI single to Nolan Arenado to tie the game in the bottom of the first. The Yankee’ bats came alive in the second when Aaron Hicks hit an RBI single to give them a 2-1 lead. Later that inning Aaron Judge hit a two run single to make it 4-1. Montas really struggled in the second inning. He gave up an RBI double to Dylan Carson to make it 4-2. Paul Goldschmidt then hit a sac fly to make it 4-3. Then Nolan Arenado blasted a three run shot to make it 6-4. Montas was pulled after three rough innings with six earned runs. Montas had a very rough Yankee debut.

Albert Abreu came on next for the Yanks. In the top of the fifth Aaron Judge hit a two out two run double to tie the game for the Yankees. In the bottom of the fifth the Cardinals got the lead back with a Paul Dejong RBI double to make it 7-6. Abeu was pulled after one out in the fifth. Jonathan Loaisiga came in with a runner on second. Tommy Edman then hit an RBI single to score the runner from second and make it 8-6. Loaisiga was pulled after loading the bases and only recording one out. Lou Trivino came on with two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth. Trivino walked Goldschmidt to score a run and make it 9-6, but he struck out the next batter to get out of the inning. In the top of the sixth the Yankees came striking back. Jose Trevino hit an RBI single to make it 9-7. Marwin Gonzalez then had an RBI groundout to make it 9-8. Wandy Peralta came on and tossed a scoreless sixth and seventh innings. Scott Effross came in for the eighth. He gave up a three run homer to Paul Dejong to make it 12-8. This was a real gut punch to the Yanks. In the ninth DJ Lemahieu hit a solo homer to make it 12-9. That was all the Yankees were able to push across in the ninth as they dropped this game 12-9. The Yankees have now lost five straight games which is by far the longest losing streak of the season. They will look to bounce back when they face the Seattle Mariners for a three game set in Seattle.
