Yankees Struggle in Queens but Acquire a Pivotal Piece with Benintendi Trade
The New York Yankees headed to Queens to face off against the New York Mets in a two game series for the first time this season. Jordan Montgomery toed the slab for the Yanks in game one. The Yankees got off to an explosive start with back to back jacks from Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Unfortunately Monty imploded in the bottom of the first. He gave up a solo home run to Starling Marte, and Pete Alsonso ripped an RBI double to tie the game. The Mets then added two more runs with an Eduardo Escobar two run shot to give the Mets a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the third the Mets made it 5-2 on a throwing error by Josh Donaldson. Jordan Montgomery was pulled from this game after 2.1 innings with five earned runs. This was Monty’s worst start of the season. He was just horrible in this one. Ron Marinaccio came in for him. In the top of the fourth the Yanks made it 5-3 on a DJ Lemahieu RBI groundout. Marinaccio was pulled after 1.2 scoreless innings. He gave the Yankees a nice outing after his stint on the IL. Jonathan Loaisiga tossed a scoreless fifth, Aroldis Chapman threw a scoreless sixth, and Wandy Peralta pitched a scoreless seventh. Albert Abreu came on for the eighth. He gave up an RBI single to Jeff MCneil to make it 6-3. The Yankees put two runners on in the ninth, but they could not come through. They dropped game one by a score of 6-3.
Domingo German got the start in game two of the Subway Series. He was making his second start of the season. He had a tall task as he was facing off against Max Scherzer. The Mets took a 1-0 lead on a Pete Alonso home run in the second. Fransico Lindor gave the Mets another run in the third inning on an RBI single to make it 2-0. German was pulled after 4.2 innings with two earned runs. He gave the Yankees a solid effort with all things considered. Lucas Luetge came on next and threw two scoreless innings. Jonathan Loaisiga came on and got the final out of the seventh. On the other side of the ball Max Scherzer was plowing through the Yankees lineup. Scherzer tossed seven shutout innings against the Yanks. David Peterson came on for the Mets in the eighth. He walked Anthony Rizzo on four pitches. Then he gave up a game tying home run to Gleyber Torres. Torres just continues to be a clutch hitter for the Yanks. Clay Holmes then came on for the Yankees in the eighth because the heart of the Mets order was due in the eighth not the ninth. Holmes threw a shutout inning. The Yanks did not scrape across a run in the top of the ninth. Wandy Peralta came out for the ninth. He gave up a leadoff double to Eduardo Escobar. Tomas Nido then sac bunted Escobar to third. Brandon Nimmo then hit a ball back to Peralta, but Peralta bobbled the ball and was unable to record an out. This gave the Mets runners on first and third with one out and Starling Marte coming up to the plate. Marte lined a single to win it for the Mets. The Yankees dropped this game by a score of 3-2 as they got swept in the two game subway series.
After the game ended it was announced by Jack Curry that the New York Yankees traded for Andrew Benintendi. The Yankees later announced that RHP Chandler Chaplain. LHP T.J Sikkema, and RHP Beck Way were traded to Kansas City for Benintendi. This is a huge boost for the Yankees who have been struggling of late. Benintendi has been tearing the cover off the ball this season for Kansas City so this is an incredible addition for the Yankee lineup. Benintendi is a gold glove left fielder and a left handed bat. He should fit extremely well into this Yankees lineup, and I’m so excited to see how he helps the team down the stretch.
